A Legend of Speed and Desperation
The Messerschmitt Me 163B was Germanys attempt to create a miracle weapon a response to Allied bombing raids. As a rocket-powered interceptor, it reached speeds exceeding 1,000 km/h, outpacing most Allied aircraft.
Designed by Alexander Lippisch and test-flown by legendary pilot Heini Dittmar, the Komet was a technological marvel the first aircraft to break the 1,000 km/h barrier. However, its incredible speed came with extreme risk.
With a flight time of just 12 minutes and a range of 27100 km, operational capability was limited. Once fuel was depleted, the plane became a glider, forcing pilots to perform challenging, unpowered landings often on a single skid. These aircraft could only return to combat after being towed back to base and prepared for another launch.
Only the bravest and most skilled pilots could fly, fight, and safely land this machine. Among them was a female pilot, whose figure is included in the set.
Despite its limitations, the Me 163 forever secured its place in history as the fastest fighter of WWII and a symbol of the desperate technological race.
